Exploring Attitudes Toward Natural Resource and Environmental Issues of Importance

Responsive Management regularly helps agencies and organizations assess attitudes toward issues related to the environment and the sustainability of natural resources. Responsive Management recently worked with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on two major survey studies.

The first project was conducted for NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program to obtain updated data on Virgin Islands residents’ perceptions of and attitudes toward coral reef and its management—this research explored both the impact of society on coral reef and the impacts of coral health on surrounding communities. Responsive Management next conducted research for NOAA’s National Hurricane Center to examine public understanding of and opinions on tropical-storm-force winds graphics—these graphics are used by emergency managers to depict the arrival time of sustained tropical-storm-force winds.

In another recent study, Responsive Management worked with the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission to conduct focus groups and a survey of residents in three Indiana counties regarding their knowledge and perceptions of the region’s air quality. The project assessed recall of outreach materials from the Commission regarding air quality as well.

For another project, Responsive Management partnered with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to survey state residents about their participation in recycling and their awareness of recycling program requirements.

And in the fish and wildlife realm, Responsive Management conducted focus groups for the Arizona Game and Fish Department to better understand hunters’ attitudes toward hunting in condor habitat.
